Having gone 28 years of my life (granted, that is my life;)) without a mascara primer, I didn’t know what I was missing! One swipe of a good primer and one swipe of mascara, and voilà, I have myself thicker, longer lashes.
Do they work? YES! Some are better than others but primers really do work.
The idea behind them is that they leave a coat of serum along the lashes and at the tip and when you apply the mascara, it actually coats the serum-coated lashes, forming a thicker, longer lash. It basically builds on it. It is the same concept as layering mascara but I find that tends to be clumpy. The primer should give you a smooth canvas to apply the mascara.
So which do I like better: Dior ‘Diorshow Maximizer’ Lash Plumping Serum vs. Smashbox Layer Lash Primer? The Diorshow and here’s why.
Smashbox (left) Dior (right) with one coat mascara
I did not use an eye lash curler with either but you can clearly see the curl and volume given by both. To break it down, notice the Smashbox on the left is a bit clumpier that the Dior on the right. It comes out of the tube clumpier. Also the bristles on the brush, I find, do not allow for individual lashes to be coated as much as the Dior which has that rubber kind which I love in general on all mascaras. Although they are pretty close in outcome, you can tell by looking at my bottom lashes that the Dior on the right has a thicker effect the the Smashbox.
One negative about both is that the serum is white. So I have to really make sure I coat the lashes well with mascara, especially at the tips so no white shows.
Do you use an eyelash primer? If so which and do you love it?
